This is one of the “must sees” of Brugge. Modest white houses watch out over a grassy courtyard and rustling trees, creating a soothing atmosphere for the weary and burnt-out sightseer. It was founded in the mid 13th Century for young women to live lives of service and piety but without the vows of a nun under the guidance of an unmarried noblewoman, the “Grande Demoiselle.” The residences are not open to the public, but the lovely14th Century chapel and a simple museum are. The chapel is small but well appointed with Louis XVI and XVII furnishings. The museum is a typical Beguine’s house authentically preserved and includes a living room, kitchen and bedroom with old furnishings.
